Flexing the "I Can" Muscle

Welcome to June!
The days are getting longer, the countdown to summer trips are on our radar, and it’s time to bring back our annual "Confi-DANCE" theme!
But instead of obsessing about the confidence of how we look in the summer, I am talking about having the confidence to try and to do. I’m talking about self-efficacy or the belief in our own capabilities to reach our goals.
With vacation breaking up routines or maybe the kids home from school, is that really possible? Well, last week I got an excellent reminder that in any season of the year, and especially in any season of life, we can still practice and strengthen our "I can" muscles.
I had the privilege of being invited to give an afternoon workshop titled "Dancing Through the Ages" to a group of women who have been meeting as a book club for nearly thirty years!
In this two and a half hour workshop, we talked about the benefits of dance as we age. We highlighted the importance of balance work through ballet moves, fired up our brains with coordination and pattern work, and really lit ourselves up with social connection through interactive games and a final dance party.
I was completely blown away by the way this group of elegant senior women participated so eagerly. Some of them were trying things they had not done in years, or maybe ever! The smiles on their faces, the laughter, and even the sweat showed me something important. Continuing to learn, trying new things, and flexing that "I can" muscle is vital to our wellbeing. It adds meaning and youthful energy to our years!
This was also a unique opportunity for Anna and me to flex our own "I can" muscles.
While we are used to hosting corporate team building events, this was one of our first chances to really share the stage together in a new way. I was leaning into my new role as a health and wellness coach rather than just as a dance fitness instructor. Anna was right there on stage showcasing her eloquent translation skills and the beautiful presence I know so many of you are already familiar with (this very newsletter being one of her translations!).
And in the end, we came away feeling that deep satisfaction that comes from trying new things and taking on a different kind of challenge. Our takeaway was that we can step into new roles and stretch the limits of our abilities in large part due to having a clear vision of sharing joyful movement and wellness with others.
So while the summer might seem like a time to just "take it easy," what small thing could you do to flex your own "I can" muscle? Could a new recipe, a new class or picking back up a hobby help give you a taste of the vision of wellness you have for yourself this summer?
