The Gift of Imperfect Joy: Why Your Holidays Don't Need to Be Flawless

Why I'm Glad I messed up...

Last week, there was a quick, little moment in class that left a big impression on me.
I was getting caught up in the fun of a song I hadn't taught in class for quite some time, weaving my way through students to strike a dramatic final pose... only to realize I had completely messed up the timing! The song continued to play on while I stood there frozen in my "finale." 😲
The class and I burst out laughing and free-styled our way to the real end of the song. It turned out to be one of those “golden nugget” moments: unrehearsed, flawed, and maybe the most fun we had all hour because of its beautiful imperfection.
It made me think of how things that are unplanned and genuine can be the most memorable and meaningful. It’s baking Christmas cookies together that turn out looking more like a disaster than the recipe photo, or the DIY ornaments I made as a kid that my mom still puts on the tree every year (Let’s just say I was no child art prodigy!).
Unlike the shiny advertisements we see online or the curated photos of acquaintances on our social media feeds, the holidays don't need to be perfect to be filled with meaning. A holiday gathering doesn't need to look fit for a movie scene, just like a Zumba class doesn't need to be taught or attended by the Rockettes to leave a stellar impression on you!
This week, let’s focus on giving ourselves The Gift of Joy.
I'm talking about not just "happy" moments that are Christmas card-worthy (yet fleeting), but rather, true "joy" as a state of being. The joy that comes from meaningful and fulfilling relationships with ourselves and others.
This distinction is so powerful. Happiness might be hitting every step perfectly. But joy is deep enough to allow for the mistakes, the missteps, the imperfections, and the challenges. It’s resilient. It survives the "frozen" moments and turns them into connection.
This year, I invite you to find that deep, resilient joy with me, whether it’s on the dance floor or in your home for an online class. Let’s choose shared connection and deep appreciation over perfection together!
Come celebrate this spirit with us at our Christmas Theme Class this coming Saturday! 🎄💃 We will be dancing, laughing, and definitely embracing the fun of the season!
I hope to see you there!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
