Dance Games for the Fam!

Need Help to Beat Summer Boredom? Try These!

This week is all about the kiddos!  Between teaching again at Sense Music’s Summer Camp and a couple children’s dance birthday parties , I’m reminded of the absolute joy and benefits of dance for kids of all ages. Watching them move with such freedom, joy, and creativity fills my heart!

Kids who dance regularly are more confident in their bodies, improve their coordination, boost creativity, and even get a cognitive workout! Plus, dancing to English commands in my class is a fun way to enhance language skills. It’s a win-win!

With summer in full swing and those dreaded “I’m bored” comments while school is out of session, I know many of you are looking for fun and engaging activities to keep your kids entertained. Bonus points if  YOU have fun and get a workout in at the same time!

So throw on some tunes (you can use my Kid’s Party Playlist here for inspiration!) and check out some simple dance games you can do at home:

  • Emoji Dance: Grab sheets of paper and draw emoji faces. For game time, choose an emoji and move like it! Happy face? Jump and clap! Sad face? Slow and gentle movements.

  • Balloon Dance: Blow up a balloon (or several!) and aim to keep the balloon in the air while dancing and not letting it touch the ground.

  • Mirror Dance: Take turns being the leader and the follower, copying each other’s movements as closely as you can.

  • Memory Dance: Create a dance routine together, adding one move at a time. See how many movements you  can remember  in the sequence before someone makes a mistake!

  • Freeze Dance: A classic! Play music and freeze when it stops, striking a funny pose.

Whether you have kids or not, a little dance break can be a mood-booster for everyone! Let me know if you try these games with your little ones. I'd love to hear about your summer dance adventures at home!

And speaking of home– don’t forget I’ll be off to the US and classes will be canceled 7/26-8/14. Make sure to come to class to get your dance on before I head out of town or sign up to join my online classes to keep dancing with me at home!

Keep moving!

xx,

Katie
