The 'S' Word for September: Your Guide to Sustainable Wellness

This fall, we're focusing on steps that actually last

And it’s begun! We’re only a few days into September and the calendar is already filling up with classes, meetings, and more! For me, this month always arrives with high hopes and a fresh burst of motivation. Anyone else feel revved up and ready to go?
The thing is, with that kind of attitude, the temptation can be to try and get straight 'A's' in every part of our lives: perfect partner, patient parent, productive professional, flawless fitness routine. But , hold up! Before you dive in and try to do all the things, I want to talk about a different letter.
Forget about the 'A' for achievement and let's focus on 'S' for Sustainability.
True progress, the kind that leads to lasting health and happiness, isn't about one enthusiastic month followed by a slump. It’s about building habits and energy that carry you through the entire season.
As you start planning your goals for the upcoming school year, keep these four 'S' words in mind to build a routine that truly supports you.
1. S is for Safety
If you're new to fitness or have had any health concerns come up over the summer, a chat with your doctor is always a smart first step. For our class, make sure you have supportive shoes designed for movement (shoes without too much grip work best!), breathable clothes, and your water bottle handy. Most importantly: listen to your body. You are your own best expert, so take breaks when you need them!
2. S is for Small
Starting with small, manageable steps isn't the sign of a slacker or an underachiever, but rather the mark of a master strategist! Each small action, like doing a 15-minute online class or taking the stairs over the escalator, builds self-efficacy. That's the powerful feeling of "I can do this!" It builds the confidence you need to tackle bigger, long-term goals one small win at a time.
3. S is for Slow
In a world that screams "go faster," slow might seem a bit… lackluster? But starting slowly with less intense workouts that suit where you and your body are right now helps to prevent injury, overuse, and burnout. My online classes Slow and Savor and Gentle Groove prove slow doesn’t mean boring. Plus, you can always increase intensity and duration gradually to a class like Busy Day Boogie (new this month!).
4. S is for Smart
You've heard me talk about this before, because it works! Turning a dream into a reality requires a plan and making SMART goals are key to developing and sticking to a plan:
Specific (What exactly do you want to achieve?)
Measurable (How will you track it?)
Achievable (Is it realistic for you right now?)
Relevant (Does it align with your bigger wellness vision?)
Time-bound (What's your deadline?) This framework transforms vague wishes into a concrete, actionable roadmap.
