connecting on and off the dance floor

ree

This whole month in November, we've been painting a picture of presence and gratitude. We started by exploring the "power of the pause”, slowing down to create space. That space then allowed us to find deeper, more present connections with ourselves and our loved ones, finding comfort in those interactions.

But what happens when we step outside that comfort zone? Does that feeling of personal connection get lost when we head out into the crowded world, filled with strangers, different views, and nameless faces on our commute?

The news might tell a different story, but this past week gave me a beautiful and resounding answer: Absolutely not.

Last Friday, I had the honor of helping The Community Services Center (The Center) with their 40th-Anniversary Fundraising Gala. I was there to help prepare and lead a flashmob. Part of me wondered, "Would the board of directors and donors really be willing to get up, get silly, and have fun with me?"

You bet they did!

Witnessing a room full of people come together to support 40 years of providing needed mental health work, educational programs, and trusted resources in Taipei was incredibly moving. It was a night of generosity, shared stories, and a powerful reminder of the immeasurable impact that community can have.

Then, I got to experience the magic again this week at a large corporate team building workshop I hosted. It's so striking to see what happens when coworkers, competitors and even bosses get a chance to become more humanized. Moving, laughing, and collaborating helps us feel connected, find comfort, and even feel courageous enough to try new things.

It proves that community opens our hearts to see our shared humanity, not just what divides us.

It turns out, this isn't just a "nice feeling – it's vital to our health. That sense of belonging is scientifically linked to a longer, healthier life, helping us manage stress and protecting our hearts and minds. We are social creatures by nature, and we need that emotional support from our community to cope with life's challenges ( Source : CDC).

And that brings me to our community.

Week after week, I show up and see the values of our dance floor in action:  acceptance, kindness, and deep respect for one another. You don't have to be the best dancer, have the perfect workout clothes, or a flawless body.  You just have to show up.

As we head into the final week of November, I am just so grateful for the community of all of you!

Keep moving!

xx,

Katie
