"New Year, New You"?! No Thanks!

Happy 2026! 🎉

How many times have you heard, "New Year, New You" so far?!

This year, I want to try something different: "New Year, New View."

Instead of trying to become someone else, what if we started 2026 by simply shifting our mindset?

Our mindsets are the perspectives and beliefs that shape how we move through the world. Over time, these beliefs can become so ingrained that we don't even notice them. We say things like "I’m just not a morning person" or "I have two left feet" without a second thought.

So, when we may want to adopt new habits for the new year, it can feel like an uphill battle to say, start a new healthier meal plan when we constantly are telling ourselves "I can’t cook" or to begin a workout routine when we often say, "I'm super lazy."

This is what we call a fixed mindset, or the belief that our traits and abilities are set in stone.

The alternative is a growth mindset — the belief that with effort, we can develop new abilities at any stage of life.

I recently witnessed a beautiful example of this with one of my one-on-one dance clients. Now in her late 60s, she decided to try Zumba for the first time. She told me she wanted to see if, after years of moving through the world one way, she could access a more tender, graceful side of herself through dance.

Week after week, I see this side of her emerging. Her enthusiasm is living proof that it is never too late to learn new skills.

So, for this first week of January, let’s stop the rush to "fix" ourselves. Instead, let's just notice.

Notice the stories you tell yourself when things get hard. Notice what’s the thought process behind your New Year’s resolution. Notice if you say "I can't" before you've even tried.

The dance floor is the perfect place to practice having a growth mindset.

This week, come to class not to burn calories or "fix" your body, but to notice the state of your mind and body. Let's use dance and playful movement to challenge those "I can't" thoughts and prove to ourselves that we are capable of growth and self compassion.

Let's start the year by seeing ourselves with a fresh view.

Keep moving!

xx,

Katie
