lessons from my time in the kindy classroom that I use for my healthy habit routine

As many of you know, before I was shaking to salsa and merengue steps along with you, I was teaching young children here in Taiwan. And besides the absolute cuteness overload, one of my favorite parts of that job was the beautiful, grounding structure of each school day.

There was a set time for nearly everything, from daily morning circle with songs, learning centers with sensory play and literacy building activities, to outdoor park time for exercise, and built-in breaks for water, food, and even naps.

Although teaching little ones could be wonderfully chaotic, I personally LOVED the structure. There was a deep sense of calm and security in having such a well-rounded, planned-out routine, and I knew it was just as beneficial for the children as it was for me ( especially when I took part in naptime! 😜 ).

Lately, I've heard the same sentiment from so many of you. As much fun as summer holidays, school days off and travels can be, there's a deep satisfaction in settling back into a schedule that supports you.

If you're still working on finding that rhythm, I want to reframe the idea of a "routine" into something more playful: Your Wellness "Class Schedule"!

A healthy and happy lifestyle isn't just about acing one subject; it's about creating a balanced curriculum for your overall well-being. For many of us, our Zumba class is the main event. It’s ‘P.E.’ and ‘Music’ class rolled into one fun, sweaty hour. But to really feel like we’re thriving, we need to make time for our other "subjects" too.

Think about adding some of these "classes" to your week:

  • "Math" Class: This could be strength training where you’re counting reps, or tracking your progress in a journal to see how far you've come.

  • "Cooking" Class: This is all about being mindful of your nutrition, taking the time to plan and prepare meals that fuel your incredible body.

  • "Study Hall": This is the quiet, essential time that’s so easy to skip. It's your dedicated moment for stretching, meditation, rest, or recovery.

You don't have to enroll in every class at once! This week, I invite you to review one 'class' in your wellness schedule. Maybe it's adding 5 minutes of 'Study Hall' (stretching) before bed, or a 'Science' lab where you experiment with one new healthy habit and collect data on how it makes you feel.

What's one new 'subject' you can focus on this week? Head over to our private Facebook group to share with us, I'd love to hear what you choose!See you this week  in-class in Taipei or online to dance with me at home!

Keep moving!

xx,

Katie
