Connection is the new "comfort food"

Slowing down and finding genuine human interaction (and comfort) by engaging all our senses

Even with the rainy gloom and whipping winds here in Taipei, my energy has felt surprisingly steady this week.
My best guess is that it’s in large part due to what we talked about last week – intentionally taking time to slow down and "pause." It was nothing drastic. Just simple things, like purposeful quiet moments, or a little less screen time replaced by lighting a candle and stretching before bed.
In that quiet space, I felt more connected to myself and could actually notice how I was feeling and care for myself better.
But as you know, I don't exactly have a job where I can be quiet or alone all day (plus I truly do LOVE loud classes!). I quickly realized that those pauses I took for myself really impacted what they allowed me to do for others. They gave me the space to connect more fully.
To have a conversation without glancing at my phone. To really notice the joy on my students' faces in class. To take the extra second in line at the convenience store, lock eyes with the person across from me, and share a real (and rare!) moment of warmth and acknowledgment.
This is what I'm learning: Taking a "pause" isn't about becoming some perfectly calm, silent, "enlightened guru," unaffected by the world. It's about feeling like myself. It's about having the energy to feel free and show up as myself – for myself, and for the people I'm with.
As the year starts winding down and these days get darker, many of us start to crave comfort—and in my case, a lot of those familiar, indulgent comfort foods come calling! But this week, I've been reminded that deep comfort can come from genuine human interaction.
I've been finding it by connecting through all my senses: Listening full-heartedly as a friend shares her worries. Hugging with my whole body. Dancing freely in a crowd to a live band last Saturday night. Savoring a wonderful meal with friends at a wedding on Sunday.
Comfort and connection might be calling to you, too. If they are, our class dance floor is such a powerful place to find it. It's a warm (okay, sweaty!) and welcoming space to experience all your senses, feel that shared energy, and connect with a community, all without ever needing to say a word.
This week, what's one small, meaningful connection that could bring you comfort?
Have a wonderful week!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
